Welcome to The Candlelit Library, a blog celebrating books.
My name is Rachel; I’m a 27-year-old book lover. I love to share photos of my books on Instagram, but I also wanted a space to put down my thoughts and book reviews in a longer form, so I decided to set up this blog.
Books are so magical. They are little doors into other worlds; doors that I want to spend my days and nights opening and stepping through, fizzing with anticipation at what’s on the other side. They are my lifelong love.
I’ve always been a voracious reader. One of my key bookish memories is from when I was eight: I spent a rainy afternoon curled up on the sofa, reading an abridged version of Great Expectations, and was so enthralled that afterwards I asked my dad if I could take a look through his collection of Dickens hardbacks. He agreed, and I sat poring over the illustrations and wishing I could make a little more sense of the words. I remember feeling so very excited at the prospect of growing up: that one day I would be old enough to properly understand such books. A passion for literature and the Victorian period blossomed within me that afternoon and still resides within me to this day.
My amazing dad is incredibly passionate about books and storytelling, so I spent my formative years listening, wide-eyed, as he read me Enid Blyton stories (The Wishing-Chair series was my favourite), or to his own self-spun yarns about witches and hobgoblins (he even took me and my siblings hobgoblin-hunting once. He’s a very committed make-believer). I got my love of storytelling, as well as reading, from him, and spend a lot of time writing my own stories.
If I was stranded on a desert island with a choice of one book to take with me, it’s so tough to know which I’d choose. I think, though, that it would have to be Jane Eyre. But under an invisibility cloak, I’d also sneak copies of Tess of the D’Urbervilles, A Christmas Carol, Carlos Ruiz Zafón’s The Shadow of the Wind, and Wuthering Heights. And Rebecca. And possibly an armful of Kate Morton novels. Plus all of the Harry Potter books…
